The Purpose of this Blog

Hello,

My name is Oriana and I am the archivist of this "Tower". This might sound like a intriguing name, but it simply comes from my previous blog, Bats on the East Tower, which I kept for 10 years. That blog will unfortunately be out of commission in June 2026 due to host changes. However, this blog is something else: a "Tower" of archives. It is a more matured approach to a topic of interest and something that I have been considering to come back to for quite a while.

If you are a previous reader, you might remember that, at some point, I started to post a lot about instances of alterophobia. If you are a new reader, maybe the term alterophobia is new to you. For that, I suggest Minton's papper Alterophobic Bullying and Pro-Conformist Aggression in a Survey of Upper Secondary School Students in Ireland. But for the sake of brevity, Alterophobia refers to the prejudice directed towards members of alternative subcultures, such as goths and emos. This type of prejudice has surfaced in association with several criminal cases, the case of Sophie Lancaster being one of the most well-known. In this archive, I will also include instances against people due to other characteristics such as tattoos, piercings and colorful hair.

This archive is a work of passion. I believe people can't understand the scope of something until that something is laid before them, neatly organized with a pretty little bow on top. I also believe that, especially in today's world, we are at at time where attention needs to be paid to what happens around us. Everything published here comes mostly from newsreports, but I will also include other sources, as well as personal accounts when the occasion comes and necessity arises. Nothing here is fictional, unless the topics discussed are specifically related to Alterophobia in Works of Fiction, which will be specifically marked. This is an archival work, and the purpose is to document these instances for possible later studies and other work.

PS: I shall also note that English is not my mother language but it is used for the sake of reaching a wider audience. So I apologize in advance for potential grammar or spelling mistakes.
