NOTE: As one can notice, this is quite a long post, as the case is very complex. While knowing more about Brian Deneke's early life could prove to be quite interesting, the post is already quite long as is, so a decision was made to not include that info. However, one can find it here.

"Short" Summary: On December 12, 1997, Brian Deneke (19 years old at the time) was involved in a fight between "jocks" or “White Hats” (according to the term used at the time) and punks. These two groups had been involved in altercations before, and rumours had been going around that a fight would happen. The "jocks" were already known for harassing the punks. While it's complicated to agree on the number of people in attendance, witnesses mention that the punks were outnumbered (around a dozen, including four girls), which supposedly led to many of them to carry weapons as a defense mechanism. Several of those involved, on both sides, had been drinking. Dustin Camp (17 years old at the time) had already been involved in altercations with the punks before and, according to them, had already threatened them with his car during a previous fight. At some point, after the fight had already broke out, Dustin Camp got in his car with two friends. One of them, Elise Thompson (16 years old at the time, and one of the only involved who hadn't been drinking), assumed he'd be taking her and the other friend home before things got worse. However, Dustin Camp spotted one of his friends being beaten up by the punks. He ended up knocking one of them down. He then spotted Brian Deneke, supposedly holding a stick, and ended up running him over, while exclaiming “I’m a ninja in my Caddy. I bet he liked that one”, a statement he later denied. Deneke’s body was completely destroyed under the car, suffering broken teeth and a tore shoulder, as well as having his pelvis, skull, spine and several of his ribs crushed. He died at the scene, on his brother’s arms.

Dustin Camp was charged with murder, but the jury ended up convicting him of manslaughter, sentencing him to 10 years probation and a fine of $10,000, which he ended up not needing to pay. On trial, Camp was described as a “clean-cut kid”, as well as a good Christian, a good Texan and a good high-school football player. On the opposite side, the defence lawyer described the punks as “drunk goons”, “sociopaths” and “thugs”, on a “conspiracy” that had been “[…] put into play . . . to kill and maim these high school students”. The clothes that Brian Deneke was using on the day of his death, as well as a picture of him sporting a mohawk, were also brought to trial, as evidence by the request of the defence. On one of his statements, Warren Clark, the defence lawyer, said: “What Dustin Camp faced out there […] was a mean drunk with a weapon […] Somewhere in the infinite processes that make a boy into a man, something happened to Brian Deneke…His manner of death was unfortunately the end result of his choices over the last six years prior to his death. You could even argue that he was destined to die the way he did. He was a violent individual. And it took violence on Dustin’s part, Dustin Camp’s part, to put an end to further violence and to save an innocent life. […] Let this boy go home, and restore him to his family […] because he did the right thing.” . Dustin Camp didn't spend a day in jail for the death of Brian Deneke. Brian's father, Mike Deneke said that the family had prepared for this outcome. Several events were made in tribute and remembrance of Brian Deneke and a movie named Bomb City (2017) was made about the event.
